Swedish Exhibition-4 : Food Scam of the Year
Products pretending to be something they are not have been around for as long as there has been someone to fool! The Swedish anti-price “Food Scam of the Year” draws attention to the trickster and put pressure on the manufacturers.
You have to read the labels very carefully to find out what the product contain – and what it does not contain.
The “winner” in 2023 was a veal stock, which contained only 0.4% veal powder. Instead
cheaper ingredients were used, and the flavour was created with veal roe and yeast extract.
Food scam of the Year was inspired by similar competitions held by the German and Dutch branches of the consumer organisation Foodwatch. The organisations also keep it eyes on the food industry – Nestlé’s “stealing” of mineral water for example.
