Swedish Exhibition-1 : Oatmeal Porridge

How many Swedes that start the day with oatmeal porridge is unknown, but it is something very Swedish.

Porridge has had sort of a come-back during the 21st century. For a while it was considered outdated, but with greater awareness of health it is back on our breakfast tables.

Oatmeal became symbolic in 2023 when Lena Andersson, debater and author, said that if children go hungry, it is the parents’ fault. There is plenty of cheap food you could serve – like oatmeal.

Many reacted with dismay, calling it another repetition of the prejudice that poor people are dumber than others.

Porridge has probably been eaten in Europe since ancient times. Crushing oats of any kind, and boil them soft makes a simple, yet very nourishing meal.

Some think it was the Vikings who came up with the idea to add some butter, as well as bringing it to the British Isles.
