Exhibition 2 – Quiz Walk – Tipspromenad

A quiz walk is a fun competition where you (or your team) walk a predetermined course at your own pace to answer questions on an answer sheet, usually twelve in number, posted along the way. For each question there are three given answer options marked with “1”, “X” and “2”.

The organizer counts how many rights each participant has, and a winner is crowned. Sometimes the quiz walk ends with a tie-breaker question, a question with no answer options, if several participants have the same score. Such a question could be guessing the number of beans in a jar.

Quiz walks are hugely popular in Sweden and can be held indoors as well as outdoors. The tradition seems to have started in the 1970s. Participation can take place in groups or individually, and since there is always the possibility of guessing the correct answer, no prior knowledge is required and are suitable for almost all ages

Many associations regularly organize quiz walks, for example sports associations use them for fund raising. Now, digital quiz walks are gaining ground. Instead of having a piece of paper and a pen, all you need is your mobile phone.

People in all countries play, go for walks and ask questions, but the Quiz walk seems to be very Swedish. The wikipedia page about quiz walks only exists in Swedish – but now, maybe that will change?

There are Treasure hunts, Themed walks and Nature walks all over Europe. Another relative is Walk and talk, where participants talk about a certain topic during a stroll. This is often used in non-formal learning.

Quiz walks are great for learning – but make sure the only wrong paths you lead anybody up are those of the mind! To construct the questions and prepare the course is great fun. To take it one step further – asking your learners to construct the Quiz walk themselves is very instructive. Asking questions is maybe even harder than to answer them!
