Swedish Timeline

1860

In the cities, food was sold in different shops. Fish, meat and charcuterie, dairy products, coffee, spices – everything was available in different shops. In the countryside, locally produced food hopefully found it’s way to the table.

1899

The consumer association was formed in 1899, wanting both better and cheaper food through joint ownership and collaboration. The consumer-owned stores were called Konsum.

1947

1960’s

ABC-communities grow up outside (or inside) cities. The idea is to have work, residence and centre in the same are. The food shops in the centre are typically large, but not huge, supermarkets.

Circa 2000

The supermarkets reach super-size, and are being established outside the city centres. The low-price chains establish themselves.

2016

Locally produced and organic food are making a comeback, among other things in the form of REKO - which today (2024) gathers 800,000 members in various Facebook groups.
